Numbers, Algorithms and Reality

It’s been a little over a week since the first song and video went live.

Well, the song, at least. The video seems intent on being a little coy.

The official music video is up on YouTube and Apple Music, but the Spotify and Amazon versions are proving more difficult, for reasons I simply can’t figure out. However, the technical gurus keep telling me not to worry, so I won’t.

Probably.

The good news is that, whilst we may not exactly be troubling Taylor Swift’s numbers, the reaction from those who have seen or heard the song has been overwhelmingly positive.

And that makes me very happy.

There is a danger with all this of becoming obsessed with algorithms, streaming numbers, views and subscriptions. It’s very easily done. You post something and suddenly find yourself peering at statistics that, a few months ago, you didn’t even know existed.

But doing that risks forgetting why I started this in the first place.

I’ve said before that I don’t really care whether 10,000, 1,000 or 10 people see or hear my stuff. I’m enjoying what I’m doing. It makes me smile to watch an idea become a song and then, rather incredibly, become a video that adds a whole new dimension to it, bringing the song to life and telling its own story.

That anyone else thinks what I’m doing is worth watching or listening to is enormously gratifying.

With that in mind, I’m pushing to get the next video ready for the release of ‘Can’t Go Home Tonight’ on 19th October. It’s rather different from Not Famous Yet, a little darker, but hopefully people will enjoy it.

At the same time, I’m progressing my third video, for a song called Reality.

I wrote Reality a long, long time ago and even recorded it with the help of my very talented friend Wolf Arndt. Wolf is an amazing musician, sound engineer and producer. He taught me the basics of mixing, did his best to show me the rudiments of mastering, and contributed his keyboard and assorted other musical talents to the recording.

But I was never completely happy with it.

That was no reflection on Wolf. I simply didn’t really know where I wanted the song to go.

With this new way of working, I’ve been able to experiment with different ideas and directions. Rather surprisingly, making the storyboard for the video also made me think again about the song itself. The pictures started influencing the music, rather than simply the music dictating the pictures, and the song shifted slightly as a result.

I’m now very pleased with where it has ended up.

The video, meanwhile, is throwing up some new challenges and no small amount of frustration. Apparently having a perfectly clear picture in my head of what I want does not automatically mean the computer shares my enthusiasm.

Who knew?

Fortunately, I still have time.

Reality is track six on the album Not Famous Yet, due for release on 6th November 2026. Hopefully, by then, it will have an awesome video to accompany it.

As the song says, we may never be famous.

But we’ll carry on doing our absolute best to produce things we can be proud of, and which we hope you guys will enjoy.

Because somewhere underneath the algorithms, streaming numbers, subscriptions, views and all the other paraphernalia that apparently comes with releasing music in 2026, that is still the whole point.
